| Geothermal refers to the heat
contained within our Earth. The pressure at the centre of our planet
generates tremendous amounts of heat which sits contently in the ground
below us. Geothermal heat is also created by the sun shining on the
earth (and oceans). Our planets surface also has giant plates called
'continental plates' sliding around its surface. The friction generated
from this sliding, rubbing movement also generates vast quantities of
heat. By tapping into these large resources, we can convert the thermal heat into useable power. The normal process is by pumping water through a hot part of the ground. It goes in cold but is heated up by the hotter ground and then returned to the surface heated up. This heat (usually in the form of steam) can then be used to drive electric generators to form electricity for daily use. |
