The futuristic looking Darrieus wind turbine was invented in 1931 by Frenchman, George Darrieus. The power output is as good as conventional wind turbines but due to stresses it can fail disastrously. Because of these limitations, the Darrieus wind turbine have seem a somewhat limited use. However, if modern materials are developed to over come these problems its use could be far more widespread.
Normally seen as a two bladed, there are also three bladed designs where the blades are helix shaped (aka, corkscrew).

Energy output - 50 to 70 Kw on a design 25 mtrs tall x 15 mtrs dia.

Size - Largest tend to be upto 25mtrs in diameter and hieght

Construction - Blades are usually a high grade aluminium and central pivot tube is made from hollow section steel or aluminium.
