Savonius type wind turbines are
elegantly simple in their design. Quite often they can be seen to be
constructed out of nothing more than large steel drums that have been
cut in half and welded together to form two blades (or 'scoops') to
capture the oncoming wind. Because
of their vertical
axis, they have no need to be 'pointed' into the wind and by adding
further blades or stacking more than one set of blades on top of one
another, can be scaled up to develop to gain more energy from the wind.
Although not likely to be seen in commercial scale wind farms, they have
a good representation in home and small scale useage.![]() Energy output - from a few Kw's. Upper output not known, probably no more than 10/20 Kw's Size - Roof mounted to 10 mtrs max. Construction - Blades (scoops) made from steel or aluminium. Mounting tower either steel frame work tower of steel hollow round pole. |
