The modern day wind turbine consists of a two or three bladed propeller, called the rotor, mounted on top of a tall tower. Although not common, they are becoming an ever increasing sight on the landscape as demand for green and renewable energy grows.
Not only are they being sited on land but also out at sea. Here they have a much more reliable and usually stronger, supply of wind. The downside is that the cost of siting them in the sea is much more expensive.

Energy output - Commercial turbines usually produce between 500Kw to 3Mw (3000Kw). 5Mw will not be uncommon in the future on the largest turbines.

Size - Largest around 130 mtrs high with smallest around 60 mtrs. This includes the rotor and tower height. Obviously smaller ones are around, see Home wind turbines for further information. Large rotors are around 90 mtrs in diameter.

Construction - Towers are made from large hollow steel ring sections, occasionally concrete with a the turbine mounted on top. The housing for the turbine is called a nacelle which not only houses the turbine but a gearbox onto which is mounted the rotor. Some wind turbines do not use gearboxes. Smaller wind turbines may be mounted on towers made from steel tubing in a lattice type construction. The rotor blades are hollow and specially formed to create the best shape to capture the winds energy.
